Jon’s enthusiasm and kindness had us jumping in with both feet. We are excited to begin this adventure with them. We have tried in the past, with our older children, at other companies and were all duds!! This place ROCKS!!
My 13 year old daughter loves it here! She is guitarist and has been playing/taking lessons for 9 years.
When the studio opened, we thought it’d be a great place for her to grow her knowledge of music. She did a songwriting summer camp and really loved it. Since then, her interest in music has expanded exponentially. She takes guitar and drum lessons here, and also takes performance band (which is seriously the coolest concept ever).
I attribute her passion to the warm, welcoming, and safe environment the owners and teachers have cultivated here. The teachers provide nearly instant feedback when a lesson is finished. The end of the term performances are so fun – it is so amazing to watch the kids learn how to perform fun songs for an audience!
If your kiddo is interested in music, this is the place to be!
Love this place from the owners to the instructors

Both of my kids have been going to School of Rock for over a year and absolutely love it! There has never been a day when they don’t want to go. The instructors do a great job making it fun yet educational and my kids love being able to choose the songs they want to learn. I’ve recommended School of Rock to close friends (that have also loved it) and I will continue to recommend them to anyone looking for a great music school.
Great place learn to play music. Very nice and helpful staff and owners.
School Of Rock on Jackson is an amazing establishment. You will be greeted by a warm smile every time and you will have professional instructors. Your lesson will be tailored to your needs and interests. I love School of Rock!
Lame and bad business practices. 🙁

My daughter has been a student with School of Rock, Canton since it opened in 10/2019. She loves the private lessons and group band practices. The best time of all is performing gigs out with the band. She has grown as a musician, singer and performer in a very short time. As a mom, I really appreciate the good people who teach and run the business at School of Rock Canton.
My boys and I love School of Rock Canton — we have a 9 year old in the Rock 101 for keyboard, a 5 year old in the Rookies group (looks like he’s gonna be a drummer) and I play bass with the adult group. From top to bottom: management, staff, instructors, and students are all amazing — felt like a family really quickly!
I was truly amazed of how my 9 year-old boy was able to go from zero knowledge of playing a keyboard to performing in front of an audience in a very short time. They have outstanding teachers and staff that are very professional plus motivate them and help them shake off first time stage-fright jitters.
Thanks, Chris! I’m thankful that Canton has the best School of Rock
They were super kind and accommodating but my child seemed to plateau in the rookies class. I fished for information on moving him forward and never got any real answers as to why he wasn’t ready for one on one lessons with one instrument as the focus.
They also restaffed the front desk and the new person doesn’t really know what they are doing. They also double charged me and more or less called me a liar when I informed them of it. I had to provide bank statements showing the double charge because they didn’t believe me. It was really bad customer service. Never got an apology for the double charge.
Between the lack of information and progress and the double charge I ended up ending our contract with them. Which was really sad because like I said they were super nice. Only reason they didn’t get 1 star was for John and Lorelei.

Everyone here is so welcoming here! I was able to sign up for a trial lesson with the general manager Josh. When I arrived I was warmly greeted by Samantha who gave us a tour of the newly renovated facility. Our lesson was with Scott and he left a lastly impression on my child. I would definitely recommend checking them out.
Great atmosphere, the staff really seem to care about music and their students. The Little Wings program is awesome and run by very cool teachers.
School of Rock GR has been fantastic for our preschooler. He especially enjoys his instructor always looks forward to attending weekly classes. Mr. Connor does a brilliant job engaging and (re)directing a room full of energetic kids. He and all of staff are so kind, enthusiastic, and clearly passionate about music which is reflected in the way they interact with the students. We really appreciated the opportunity to do a trial lesson before starting classes, it was a great chance to check out the curriculum; the levels and structure of which are really thoughtfully tailored to age and skill level. Certainly for our kiddo it is both challenging and fun and we’ve already seen the impacts of what he’s been picking up in class. We look forward to continuing here as he progresses.

Our child had a wonderful first experience at BLFAC a few weeks ago. Came home energized about music. Made new friends. Staff was very friendly.
I had the best time going for my second year at camp this past summer. I made so many great friends and I plan to keep going back! I love this camp and I recommend that you go if you can!
I was an art major here, blfac doesn’t care as much about the art people as they do the band people. I say this because band kids have a lot more time to get their assignments done and be prepared, while our kids have 11 days to get 7 projects done, that’s a lot of pressure on Art Kids and still only giving us about an hour free time everyday. Every night every camper has to watch a band concert for about an hour an hour and a half f, while I respect musicians I’m not one I didn’t come to Blue Lake to watch something I don’t really care about every night, would you make band kids come watch are people draw for an hour? These concerts really lowered my motivation to want to come back the next year. So to the administration people I highly suggest that you make this simple change for the greater good of the art side of your campers and for better success in your camp. Thank you.
Update 2021 – I will say, the staff is more helpful/communicative this year. My daughter had a much better 2nd visit and may go back for a 3rd. She had great instructors & staff, and made new friends. I do think Blue Lake need to update their documents to show 7800 Russell and perhaps get Google maps to cooperate, and maybe add some office staff. Still some room for improvement but overall a much improved experience. Thank you! 🙂
2019 – I called trying to get some information on my daughter’s stay at camp and final day. First, I found the info on the pre-prepared online documents (Final Sunday and otherwise) to be inaccurate. The correct info would’ve been good to know before mailing her a package she now may not get. Also, currently unable to purchase the final day parent lunch online, and it’s too late to mail the order form. Also, I was told the 300 E. Crystal Lk. address is incorrect or not the ‘good’ pickup address, which is 7800 Russell – I don’t see that info ANYwhere in the available online documents in the ACCESS pages. Good thing I called?? Speaking of which, I had some specific questions about my daughter and was told the cabin counselor would call me back within 2 hours, possibly with my daughter on the line as well. I have yet to receive a callback. She might be having a great time, happy and healthy… but I have no way to know (until after), and at this rate I’m pretty disappointed with the inaccuracy of info I’ve seen and been told. For the price of this camp, I would like to think that the value would be more than just the ‘prestige’ & that they’d have their ducks in a row a little better.
Additionally, they charge for email credits to send your child an email. Really? After the exorbitant cost of the camp, they nickel and dime you for ’email credits’? There’s NO REASON why the kids shouldn’t be able to use their own phone/email afterhours. It’s tying our hands and then forcing us to pay for a service we really don’t need. I suppose the premise is to ‘unplug’ for 10 days. But I still believe we shouldn’t have to PAY to stay in touch with them.
AWFUL HUGE SPIDERS AND THE FOOD SUCKS AND WAKE UP IN 6 AM AND LOTS OF WALKING AND DEATH AND 3 HOUR LONG PEACTICEA IN TOTAL PER DAY
I sent my brother there for choir and radio broadcasting. He learned nothing he didn’t improve any skills it was a waste of money. He said the other campers and the councilors treated him terribly.
If you or your child is going to blue lake, I HIGHLY recommend bringing a bunch of snacks for whenever there’s an opportunity to eat. The portions you get at meals are incredibly small and with all of the walking with only small breaks, you may feel lightheaded quickly. I was a band major and had a great time with my classes but when I wasn’t in those classes I was miserable. I don’t recommend Blue Lake as a first summer camp as it can get overwhelming extremely fast.
I left a message requesting tickets to the Jazz Spirituals concert and was surprised that not only was my message returned after their Holiday break but they offered to mail the tickets to my home! Happy camper.
Many fine teachers and artists in the college of music. Great concerts.
Everyone was extremely kind, knew me by name, and listened interestedly to my concerns
This is one of the older, traditional buildings in the old part of the Campus. Mostly office and rehearsal spaces, but Cook Recital Hall is the scene of a lot of student and faculty performances.
Undergoing a lot of updates and expansion. The facilities are out of date and all need a big update. May increase score to a 5 when the refurb and expansion is complete. The programs they offer are great but like all schools the program you want may or may not be what you want.
My Fiance goes here and it seems like her masters program is top notch.
My experience with the admissions department was very frustrating and disappointing. I auditioned for the Woodwind Specialist MM program. I received a letter from the graduate school at Michigan State saying I was admitted. I even received the same letter in snail mail. A week later I received a letter from the music department saying that I wasn’t admitted for the Woodwind Specialist program, but they would admit me for the clarinet performance MM if I desired. When I called asking why I received the first letter from the graduate school, the man seemed confused and said I [didn’t] receive a letter because it wasn’t in the records. Why would I make up receiving a letter that I was admitted? He reiterated their policy that the letter from the music department comes first. I said that obviously, their letter had NOT come first. When I emailed a copy of the letter I received from the graduate school saying I was admitted to both the associate director and the director, I received NO response. My problem was NOT with the faculty’s decision. My problem is with the administrative issues. It does not speak highly of the university and does not motivate me to spend 30K on tuition. Simple empathy or an apology of some sort would have gone a long way. Instead, I am sadly writing this Google review to tell you about my experience.

The owner definitely takes customer service to the next level. Talking to him definitely made me feel a lot better and I gotta say he made my day today. Thanks for the call. Awesome drum teacher.
I’m just starting my 3rd session of Music Together at the Grosse Pointe Music Academy in Canton. We have thoroughly enjoyed our experiences! My boys are very shy, so getting them around other kids and involved has taken a lot of creativity. The music together classes are wonderful – playful, energizing – the kids are really able to participate as much or as little as they want. My kids love the listen to the music at home and in the car, and often sing and dance along with the songs. Our teacher is very engaging! For anyone with toddlers or preschoolers, I HIGHLY recommend this program.
Very friendly and knowledgeable staff.
It was nice the guitar teacher was knowledgeable and kind. Check it out if kids want music lessions
The secretary it’s not friendly at all.

J-Ro school of music is outstanding. They take a holistic approach to teaching you. I am learning voice and guitar, and I find that they teach me the basics and theory, but mix in enough fun and performance challenge to keep it very lively. The teaching professionals are not just amazing musicians (they can demonstrate anything); they also have excellent patience, a positive attitude, and really care about you and your success. Carey DeWitt
My son Loves his voice and guitar lessons with J-RO! He gets plenty of individual attention in the group sessions and comes out with the biggest smile on his face. I would highly recommend J-RO for anyone wanting to learn or improve their musical skills!
Josh is an amazing teacher that is incredibly dedicated to delivering the best value and results to his students. I recommend him to everyone in Troy and Detroit!
Classes are good but sometimes you can’t hear yourself even with the headphones as some instrumentalist will be playing acoustic instruments
We’ve been attending for several months now, underwhelmed by our child’s progress. Appears to be partially attributable to poor management
Interlochen Center for the Arts
Address: 4000 J. Maddy Pkwy, Interlochen, MI 49643 , Lyasny , Michigan , United States
Attended a creative writing class which was absolutely first class. Great instructor who taught on the finer points of revising a draft as well as creating the intersection between emotion and things in one’s writing.
Fantastic environment to experience great music, theater, and other performances. Also, a wonderful academic experience. The cosmopolitan setting is hard to find anywhere else; it’s unique and wonderful!
We ALWAYS enjoy ourselves at this terrific venue!
This is a fine Campground to camp at. Plenty of sites available and nice proximity to Downtown Traverse City. Don’t forget to stop at Bud’s down the Road!
Far from perfect but a great arts camp overall
I’ve heard of Interlochen before, and know a few people that have attended. This was my first experience going to a concert there. My husband and I got there early to look around. It was really fun, and we enjoyed listening to students practice in the small practice cabins littered throughout the campus.
The Concert itself was great. I saw other people complain about having to bring in a clutch or clear bag instead of a purse. Those rules are stated clearly when you buy the ticket though, nice and big. I brought a clutch and was SO glad I did. The stadium is nice, but the seating is old. So there really isn’t much space for everyone to be bringing in large bags.
Everyone was also great about listening to the music and not taking out your phones to take photos. (Also a rule) it’s the first time in ages I’ve been anywhere were people weren’t taking selfie after selfie the entire time. (People, including me, took out their phones at the very last performance to take photos, and I think that worked best.)
Also, the Tamale Ladies food truck was at the venue! So freaking yummy!
Brothers Osborne did a good concert but everything about the venue sucked. From no alcohol to no smoking. Anywhere during the event. Reconsider if your looking to go have fun at a concert!!!
So sad. No students. No programs. Like a ghost town.
I just don’t want my friend to go live so far away
