atlanta festival academy! aka the best summer music camp in atlanta. i am a viola student at the camp and of its founder william pu music academy. i first attended afa’s 2019 concert and supported my best friend in the atlanta festival competition in 2020. after i started getting more into the viola, i attended afa’s camp in 2021. there, i grew so much in their chamber music program. immediately i was put with charlotte jeong (best friend and 1st violin), ellie kim (2nd violin), and abby kim (cello). and we formed the vienna string quartet! all of them have now become my best friends and we have stuck together through many performances. our first performance was actually during the AFA 2021 camp. they gave us an oppurtunity to perform for the johns creek city council on behalf of mr. william pu. we also got a chance to play at the finale concert (chamber recital) at the end of the camp, and recently got to perform at WPMA’s showcase day. this is all because of afa and it’s amazing organization. as you attend afa, you can make new friends, meet world renowned violinists, cellists, AND violists. masterclasses are also held at the camp (i participated in the masterclass featuring professor rita porfiris at the university of hartford), play in the finale concert orchestra (with a talented soloist featured every year), and take private lessons and group coachings with the vega string quartet and many other faculty members. if you are looking for a great summer experience to boost your music ability and enhance your performance skills, afa is the way to go!
okay i’m updating this review after the atlanta festival academy’s 2022 camp! and i have to say this was quite a full 2 weeks of camp! we got to perform this year with kevin zhu, and he was obviously outstanding. i got the opportunity to perform in another masterclass with mr yiwen jiang with my quartet, and i learned a lot from him. i think next year this camp will grow even more and expand even bigger than this year. i made so many new friends and met so many amazing people i cannot wait for the next afa camp!
